The Heartland of Suburbia (has lived here)

Glenabbey Dr is located in the southern part of Courtice, Ontario, a community within the municipality of Clarington on the eastern fringes of the Greater Toronto Area. Courtice is the epitome of an "exurb" it has no downtown core or commercial centre and is merely made up of a series of stereotypical subdivisions.

Glenabbey Dr is arguably one of the main thoroughfares in South Courtice, although lined with houses and a school, it is a highly trafficked residential road. In terms of the neighbourhood life, it is largely family-oriented, with a multitude of both younger and older families. There is a public catholic school located on the street which is extremely convenient for those with young children, however, parents whose kids are not catholic will have to depend on school bus service. Same goes for those with high-school age students.

Public transport in this area is minimal and owning a car is more or less a necessity, which makes it a poor location for retirees and young working class people with no cars. It is also in an awkward position in relation to major thoroughfares as it is quite a distance away from Highway 401 (main east-west thoroughfare) and Highway 2 (a main avenue)

There is one small shopping plaza on Glenabbey Drive located at the Townline Road intersection. It contains a convenience store, game shop and hair stylist/spa. It is relatively useful considering residents would have to drive roughly 5 minutes for a major commercial plaza (with a supermarket).

In terms of friendliness, I've had mixed experience on this street. The majority of people keep to themselves, especially if they have no children. However, people are relatively cordial. There is however a growing crime issue in terms of thefts and vandalism in the area, largely due to the communities proximity to Oshawa on the west. (Townline Rd acts as a division between Clarington/Courtice & Oshawa).

This area also has growing resale potential, and most people here tend to stay about 3-5 years and then sell their homes, especially if they have older children. Housing prices are relatively affordable compared to other Toronto area neighbourhoods considering the house sizes largely range from 1500-2500 sq ft.

On the whole I would recommend this community only to families with kids or couples planning to have children. This area is definitely not suitable for singles and retirees due to the lack of medical services, public transport, and entertainment facilities in the immediate area.

Bottom line, if you move here, buy a car or two.
